Laboratory of Experimental Immunology

Laboratory of Experimental Immunology was built at the Lobachevsky University of Nizhny Novgorod in 2014 for research project "Novel anti-TNF therapeutics for autoimmune diseases" under th guidance of Prof Nedospasov Sergey.

Therapeutic neutralization of TNF in patients with various autoimmune diseases is experiencing a remarkable success, and antibody-based anti-TNF drugs are among best selling biologicals. In Russia and in many other countries this therapy remains too expensive, and only small fraction of patients with rheumatoid arthritis or Bekhterev disease may have access to such treatment. This project will provide a new technological platform for pre-clinical testing of recently developed Russian generics for anti-TNF drugs using “humanized” mice. More importantly, critical evaluation of known physiological functions of TNF in vivo suggests that there may be a better and safer modality of anti-TNF therapy based on TNF neutralization in only pathogenic sources, such as myeloid cells. This new concept is supported by strong published and unpublished preliminary data. Overall, the success of this project may lead to better, safer and more affordable therapy of autoimmune diseases in Russia.
